why belfast?
Northern Ireland has a population of approximately 1.685 million, of various backgrounds and religions. There is a high percentage of the population under 16 [23.6% of the population are under 16 according to the 2001 census]. Recent figures show more than 40% of 11 to 15-year-olds drink while a quarter of 12 to 16-year-olds use drugs.Experts in the medical profession report that alcohol and substance misuse is increasing among young people in the Province.
Associated with alcohol and drug misuse are issues like crime, school absenteeism, taking sexual risks, violent behaviour, conflicting with parents and debt.
The Church of Ireland produced a recent report that looked into the drinking habits of young people in Ireland. Former Archbishop of Armagh, Robin Eames, stated that "the Church must come to terms with this social evil and take every opportunity to encourage the full understanding of the problem.”
Irish Church Missions is doing exactly that in Belfast city, and we are only scratching the surface.
